Yucatán, Mexico has an area of 38,402 sq km and a population of about 1,818,900. Its capital is Mérida.
Yucatan shares its boundaries with the Mexican states of Quintana Roo and Campeche and is bounded by the Gulf of Mexico to the north. The topography is dominated by its coastline along with a vast landscape of savannah-land.
Apart from a number of Spaniards and Creoles, the population of the state of Yucatán consists mainly of Maya Indians and Mestizos (mixed indigenous and foreign ancestry)
