Sendai

Tourist guide Sendai

Sendai, or the ‘City of Trees’, is the capital of the Miyagi Prefecture in Japan. The largest city in the Tohoku region, it is home to a population of about one million people. One of the fourteen designated cities of Japan, Sendai is the political and economic capital of the Tohoku region.
The climate of Sendai is of the temperate variety with warm to hot summers and cool winters. Snowfall is a regular feature, albeit it does not stay for long. The city receives late monsoons from July to September. In comparison with other Japanese cities, Sendai has a more agreeable climate.
Sendai was founded by daimyo Date Masamune in 1600 and incorporated as a city in 1889. It has a strong economy; retail and service sectors form its main components.
